The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, located in the Flathead National Forest consists of the Great Bear Wilderness and the Scapegoat Wilderness Areas covering more than 1.5 million acres. The Bob Marshall Wilderness extends for 60 miles (95 km) along the Continental Divide with elevations varying from 5,000 feet to over 9,000 feet.
The Bob Marshall Wilderness Area was named after an early forester, Bob Marshall who also cofounded the Wilderness Society. For more information on Bob Marshall, the man, you may want to read A Wilderness Original: The Life of Bob Marshall by James M. Glover.
This area contains numerous waterfalls, lakes and forests sustaining the wildlife which includes moose, elk, black bear, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, wolves, osprey, bald eagles, trumpeter swans and more. The grizzly bear population in the Bob Marshall is the second highest in the US after Alaska.
Big game hunting, fishing, hiking, floating, canoeing, wild berry picking and studying rocks and fossils are some of the many activities for the outdoor enthusiasts.
The wilderness area can be accessed by trails from surrounding roads. To the north is US Highway 2 which separates the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area from Glacier National Park. Other access points include US Highways 89 and 287 to the east and Montana Highways 200 and 83 are to the south.
