The Klickitat River is located in the Southeast Cascades. While it's great class 3 whitewater, the scenery is what makes this trip so unforgettable. The river lies within a broad canyon, ranging from 400-800 feet deep. The broadness of the canyon allows for plenty of sunshine. The surrounding plateau is populated by ponderosa pine and a variety of wildlife. Tall columnar basalt formations tower above the river in some places and waterfalls spill over the walls. The most spectacular of these waterfalls is Wonder Falls, a natural spring erupting from the canyon wall and cascading down 40 feet or so over rocks and logs into the river.
Trip lengths on the Klickitat River vary as there are many access points to put into and take out of the river. On the main section of these trips, you'll be delighted by plenty of class 3 whitewater, among rapids with names like Spearchucker, Rattler, Diamond Back, and Hatchery Drop. The main hazard is logs, which change locations each year; occasionally rafters have to portage their boats around a log or two.
