Border Crossing
Transporting Firearms

Disclaimer: This information is provided as a service to our visitors and no guarantee is made as to its completeness or correctness. All information should be independently verified with the relevant authorities.

The following tips to make your border crossing go smoothly have been gleaned from other sources including the web sites for US Customs and Canada Customs. Consult those sources for detailed information and for answers to questions about your particular situation.

Visitors to Canada should remember that the importation of firearms is strictly controlled. Travelers must declare all handguns, rifles and other forms of self defense and recreational weapons and provide any required documentation.

Visitors not in possession of a Canadian firearms licence, and in the case of a restricted firearm, a registration certificate, must declare their firearms in writing by completing a Non-Resident Firearms Declaration (CAFC 909). If you are importing restricted firearms, you also require an Authorization to Transport (ATT).

An ATT and a CAFC 909 can be obtained by contacting the Canadian Firearms Program at 1-800-731-4000. For additional information about importing firearms into Canada, please visit the Canadian Firearms Program section of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Web site.

Travelers should keep in mind that border rules can, and do, change frequently. Agriculture, commercial importations (including small amounts of banned or quarantined foods) and firearms are the three main topics of concern at the Canadian-US borders.
