National Forests

Custer National Forest is one of the gateways to Yellowstone National Park and one of the largest intact temperate ecosystems left. The Beartooth Mountains offer spectacular hiking and fishing and the Beartooth Scenic Byway provides awe inspiring views as the road winds upward of 11,000 feet.

The Gallatin National Forest consists of 1.8 million acres and part of the Greater Yellowstone Area, the largest intact ecosystem in the US and includes the Absaroka-Beartooth and Lee Metcalf Wildernesses.

Scenic Byways

Beartooth Scenic Highway. US Highway 212, Cooke City, MT.
This byway crosses the Beartooth Mountains providing access to the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park and is the highest elevation (topping 11,000 feet) in the Northern Rockies offering spectacular views and unlimited outdoor recreation. Allow two to three hours to drive the 68.7 miles (110.6 kilometers).

Chief Joseph Scenic Highway
Located along the northeastern edge of Yellowstone National Park and connecting Highway 212 to Wyoming 120, this byway offers the opportunity to see where the legendary flight of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce occurred. Allow a minimum of 2 hours to drive the 47 miles (75.6 kilometers).
