Lighthouses

Still standing today as sentinel overlooking the very dangerous body of water of the confluence between the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, the North Head Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation via an automated beacon. Enjoy the grand, scenic views of the Pacific Ocean, Long Beach Peninsula, Columbia River Bar and the northern Oregon Coast.

The Cranberry Museum is dedicated to teaching the history and industry of the crimson colored berry. Take a self-guided walking tour of the bogs, visit the gift shop where you can purchase cranberry products or enjoy a cup of cranberry tea along with other cranberry concoctions.

Marsh's Museum is for the unique and unusual curiosities. Inside you can explore the turn-of-the-century machines, from Victorian era music makers such as an imported French Canary music box and a self-playing violin, fortune tellers, nickel peep shows and a love meter. Be sure to visit the most famous resident, Jake the Alligator Man.

State Parks

Located 2 miles southwest of Ilwaco off Highway 101, Cape Disappointment is a 1,882-acre camping park on the Long Beach Peninsula, fronted by the Pacific Ocean. The park offers 27 miles of ocean beach, two lighthouses (North Head and Cape Disappointment), an interpretive center and hiking trails. Visitors enjoy beachcombing and exploring the area's rich natural and cultural history including an interpretive center and museum. The water at the Columbia River entrance is so rough that two lighthouses warn ships of the danger.

Bordering the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, Leadbetter Point, a day use park, is a natural open area and part of the Willapa Bay Water Trail. Visitors can enjoy the 5 miles of ocean beach, several miles of bay beach plus scenic views of the Pacific Ocean to the west and Willapa Bay and hills to the east.

Perched high on the cliffs of Cape Disappointment Park, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center depicts the story of the Corps of Discovery's journey through interactive exhibits, mural sized panels detailing the westward journey of the Lewis and Clark Expedition through sketches, paintings, photographs and the words of Corps members themselves. Also featured is a short film presentation, gift shop and a glassed-in observation deck. Other displays on local maritime and military history are also included.

Unique and Unusual

Jake the Alligator Man
Undoubtedly, Jake the Alligator Man, a mummified half man and half gator, is the most famous attraction in Marsh's Free Museum. Every year in August, a Birthday Bash is held for Jake. Click on the link for more information and to read Jake's blog.

 Established in 1937, Willapa Refuge consists of over 16,000 acres of tidelands, temperate rainforest, ocean beaches, small streams and several rare remnants of old growth coastal cedar forest preserving the habitat for spawning wild salmon, hundreds of thousands of migrating shore birds as well as other threatened species. Experience the unique ecosystems including diverse salt marshes, rich tideflats, rain-drenched old growth forest, and dynamic coastal dunes.
