Getting There

Getting to Blake Island is limited to privately owned power boats, kayaks and other non-motorized water craft, and regularly scheduled tour boats. The tours are scheduled by Tillicum Village, a licensed concessionaire that provides meals, entertainment and educational programs on the island.

Blake Island's location in the populous Puget Sound area and the island's state park designation as a marine camping area make it an attractive destination for boating outings whether they be day trips or overnight excursions. Situated approximately 8 miles from downtown Seattle in the middle of Puget Sound, the island is close enough for a day sail, yet far enough removed from the chaos and clamor of the city to be worth the excursion. It also is invitingly close for a kayak trip from Bainbridge Island.

There are several popular ways to reach the small island:

By private motor boat

Most power boats coming from the Seattle area launch from the Don Armeni Boat Ramp and Viewpoint, at 1222 Harbor S.W., which sits at the tip of Duwamish Head, at the mouth of Elliot Bay. An attractive launch point that faces the Seattle Center skyline, it is an immensely popular location. Caution is advised when negotiating ferry channels. A fee machine is on site, which is closed after 11 p.m. Other launch points include Eagle Harbor and Fort Ward State Park on Bainbridge Island. Moorage rental is available and is first-come, first-serve, year round

By kayak

Kayakers paddling to Blake Island favor Alki Beach Park, at 1702 Alki Ave. S.W. as a launch point. The 4-mile kayak trip to Blake Island requires negotiating the ferry route, which can be choppy during inclement weather. For a shorter paddle, take the Fauntleroy ferry to Southworth and launch from Manchester State Park (a two-mile trip to Blake Island). Launching from Ford Ward State Park or Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island is also popular. There are multiple locations to disembark your kayak at Blake Island.

By tour boat

Tour boats going to Blake Island are scheduled by Tillicum Village. The four-hour round-trip tour of Puget Sound commences in downtown Seattle. A salmon dinner and Native American cultural dances are optional. Kayaks are allowed on board the vessel. Available March to October.
