Galiano Island, known for its inviting, easy-going atmosphere and dry climate, is among the Gulf Island's most popular stops. Often referred to as the jewel of the Strait of Georgia, the slender, 19-mile- /30 km-long island is the first stop on the ferry from British Columbia's mainland.

Named after the 18th century Spanish explorer Dionisio Galiano who sailed the Strait of Georgia in 1792, Galiano is coveted as a rich ecological paradise. More than 100 species of birds make their homes on the island, which has several ecological reserves and parks. To the credit of its 1,000 human residents, the island remains cautiously undeveloped. Commercial amenities have been kept to a minimum in order to preserve the island's pristine atmosphere.

Of the seven parks on the small island, Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park is one of the largest, spanning 219 acres/89 hectares on the west side of the island. Its shell beaches are particularly popular during the summer. Dionisio Point Provincial Park, (348 acres/141 hectares) is a favourite amongst boaters and beachcombers. Other parks and reserves on the island offer deep wooded trails for hiking and mountain biking, as well as spectacular vistas of Vancouver Island and the more distant Olympic Peninsula and San Juan Islands of Washington State.

Despite Galiano's size, the island has something for just about every interest - including a golf course for those who don't want to put away their irons. Dining is available at the golf and country club and several retreats and inns offer accommodations. But unmistakably, it is Galiano's undeveloped beauty and carefully preserved natural setting that affords it the distinction as one of the Gulf Island's best kept secrets.
