Belfair, Washington, located about 20 miles southwest of Bremerton at the intersection of State Highway Route 3 and 300, is a small unincorporated community of a few hundred people that is the gateway to recreation opportunities to found on and near the southern waters of Hood Canal.
Belfair is the economic hub of the area and a great place to pick up supplies whether its groceries from two different supermarket chain stores, fuel for the car boat, or, simply information about the area. A good place to start for information is the Mason County Visitor Information Center at 30 NE Romance Hill Road, Suite 103. The nice folks there will provide you with information about hiking and ORV trails, local marinas and also free maps and brochures of the area.
The Tahuya ORV Park of Belfair, WA is popular with trail riders who bring motorcycles, four wheelers, ATVs, dirt bikes, mountain bikes, raised trucks, snow mobiles and sleds to ride. Western Washington is wet or snowy year round, so the trails are often muddy or snowy! Some of the better known trails are Mission Creek, Magic Bus, and Overland with its sand hill gravel pit. Bring spiked tires if you want to try riding motorcycles in the snow.
Swimming, camping, boating, wildlife siting and other outdoor activities abound in and around Belfair. The Theler Wetlands 360-275-4898 are open from dawn till dusk year round for viewing wild life. The town has four small lakes, two of which you can access on NE McKnight Road. Part of Belfair straddles a peninsula between the Hood Canal and the Puget Sound. Gorgeous waterfront properties line them and scuba divers enjoy the deep salty waters of both. Swimming beaches await you at Twanoh State Park and Belfair State Park.
Famous local music haunts Lil Moe's and The Looney Bin Saloon make Belfair a destination all on their own because big name bands play here. The Mason County Metal Festival is held at The Looney Bin Saloon each October. This is an old logging saloon and is worth looking at even if you aren't hungry or thirsty or wanting some good music.
A free annual culinary delights festival in Belfair every august, called "Taste of Hood Canal" is put on by The North Mason Rotary Club 360-850-1090. Wander among the booths and taste wine, beer and local restaurant food while you listen to live music and see vintage cars. The kids will love the chain-saw carving demonstrations.
Enjoy bagpipe music, highland games and the gathering of the clans in early September at the two-day Hood Canal Highland Celtic Festival 360-275-9882. Hosted by the Theler Community Center, this event also features Celtic dancers, Scottish and Irish crafts, food vendors and a beer garden. Highland games are thought to be practice for fighting with heavy broadswords. The caber toss involves throwing a log almost three times as long as the thrower!
Find all the visitor information you need to plan your trip to Belfair. Just use the navigation links in the left hand column or the drop down menu at the top of the page to find where to stay, where to eat, what to see and what to do.
