St. Regis Montana is a small town, population only 319 according to the 2010 census, but a handy waypoint if not a destination. There is more here than meets the eye when seen from I-90. You may even want to make it a destination for a night or two or more.
St. Regis is somewhat of an oasis along the high-speed ribbon of gray that is I-90 when traveling either east or west in a hurry to get somewhere else. The town is small in size (only 510 acres) but big in potential. So, slow down and take a break from the rush and enjoy what this little village has to offer.
St. Regis also is a popular waypoint for travelers driving to
Glacier
National Park when driving I-90. The St. Regis exit, Exit 33, is located
at the junction of Montana State Route 135 with I-90. The exit is 33
miles east of Lookout Pass and about 71 miles west of
Missoula and
provides access to one of the more popular routes to Glacier NP. The
town also is located at the confluence of the St. Regis and Clark Fork
Rivers
But whether exiting here to drive to Glacier, or driving straight
through on I-90, a stop in St. Regis is well worth the time. There is
much to see and do.
Looking for food? Then you have found the right place for a burger and a milkshake, a steak or even seafood.
The St. Regis Travel Center is a complex that includes a restaurant, gift shop, minimarket and a Conoco service station. Dine in, grab supplies for a quick picnic at a nearby park, or just pick up snacks for back on the road. Note, however, that the St. Regis Travel Center is not to be confused with the state visitor center, which also is located in St. Regis on Highway 135 a short distance north of the main intersection.
Jaspers Restaurant, a couple of doors down from the “Travel Center”, is connected to a casino and might suit the traveler wanting to while away some time at the slots, enjoy a beverage of choice or a more leisurely meal. Next to Jaspers is the Talking Bird Saloon.
Then, a few blocks northeast of the main intersection on Highway 135 you will find the OK Cafe & Casino, which is a dinner that also is popular with travelers.
If you are looking for groceries, then stop at Stangs Food Center, which is located just east of the main intersection, and is open 9AM–9PM.
St. Regis offers a large community park and annually host several events. One is the Memorial Day Weekend Parade and Flea Market. The year 2017 marked the 41st year of the Memorial Day parade.
John Cheesman, a long-time resident of St. Regis and a member of the
Resort Board and the Community Council, says, “The Memorial Day flea
market features more than 200 vendors and draws crowds of 5,000 or more
people from all over the northwest.” In the most recent year, 220 vendor
spaces all sold out three weeks prior to the Flea Market. The cost
charged for a 20-foot by 24-foot space is $90.00 for the three-day
event.
Cheesman noted that vendors participating in the flea market come from
as far away as Seattle as well as from such places as Spokane, Coeur 'd
Alene, Sandpoint and Moscow, Idaho as well as from Billings, Bozeman,
Kalispell and Missoula, Montana. He added, “There are probably more
out-of-staters than there are Montanans that set up booths.”
Money from the event goes for community projects and a scholarship for high school kids. Cheesman explained that qualification for obtaining a scholarship is based on community involvement and community service rather than grades.
To accommodate such large crowds, the Community Council runs a shuttle every 30 minutes from parking areas to the main event.
Another big event is the Fourth of July parade featuring 100 or more vehicles and floats. Following the parade is a big fireworks display.
