The Dalles, Oregon
The Dalles, Oregon has held a strategic place in Oregon's geography for more than 100 years. Once referred to as "the end of the Oregon Trail" it served as the transfer point for west-bound emigrants en route to the Willamette Valley. Today, it serves as a junction point for recreationists who want to experience the beauty and adventure of the Columbia Gorge.
Perched on the banks of the Columbia River, The Dalles offers a one-stop destination for numerous windsurfers. With near-constant winds of 10 miles an hour and up, the Columbia Gorge offers a perfect location for surfing. Many novice windsurfers come to The Dalles to hone their skills, where the winds are milder than other parts of the Gorge.
Boating is also a favorite pastime on the mid-Columbia River. There are numerous boat-launching sites on both the Washington and Oregon sides. The Port of The Dalles includes a marina with guest moorage and boathouses, and a yacht club that sells gas and diesel.
Steelhead and sturgeon are popular catches around The Dalles area. Retention limits vary according to the time of year, location and species of fish. Fishing enthusiasts should check state regulations before planning their fishing trip.
The Dalles Dam is located at Seufert Park and maintains a visitor center in the old Seufert Cannery. The dam is open to the public on a limited basis during the summer months.
For an appreciation of the river's breadth and might, Sorosis Park, high above The Dalles offers a one-of-a-kind glimpse of the Gorge. The park includes picnic facilities, a veteran's memorial, rose gardens and a hiking trail.
Festivals include the famous Fort Dalles Days Pro Rodeo in July and the Celilo Mid-Columbia River Pow Wow in April (at Celilo Village, 11 miles east of The Dalles).
