Thompson Okanagan Travel Region
Vernon, BC

Vernon marks the crossroads to two of British Columbia's most popular recreation areas: The Okanagan Valley, with its stunning vistas of vineyards and sun-drenched beaches and the dramatic BC Rockies, known for its own magnificent scenery, guest ranches and incredible driving tours.

Vernon is far from the incidental stop however. Located at the juncture of Highways 6 and 97, this vibrant metropolis of 35,000 is the oldest incorporated city in the Okanagan Valley. Adorned with dramatic full-size murals, the downtown sector is an art lover's dream. A walking tour of more than 20 murals winds through Vernon's downtown, past stores, enticing cafes and theaters. Sidewalk performances, annual festivals and historical museums are a few of the attractions at the city's center.

Vernon also has a wide range of shopping opportunities to offer the visitor. Farm markets are a specialty of the Vernon area and feature fresh Okanagan produce, cheeses, wines and meats throughout the city.

Recreational activities are also easy to find at the northern end of the Okanagan Valley. Silver Star Mountain Resort and Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre are both located in the Vernon area and offer prime winter facilities. Sun Peaks, near Kamloops, is a popular recreation area and hosts the region's Ice Wine Festival each January. Vernon is also on the route to several Rocky Mountain national parks, famous for heli-skiing and backcountry recreational opportunities.
