Quesnel, like many cities in BC's
Cariboo Region, owes its early development to the Cariboo Gold Rush. A
critical supply point for gold prospectors during the latter half of the
19th century, Quesnel became a boomtown almost overnight. Today, it is
its proximity to natural wonders such as Bowron Lakes Provincial Park
and its strategic location on the route to Alaska that gives the town
its notoriety.
A veritable goldmine for recreational
activities, the Quesnel area offers almost
every type of backcountry activity from mountain climbing to pack and
trail rides. Positioned at the confluence of the Fraser and Quesnel
Rivers, it shares the area with a number of historical attractions,
including the Quesnel Museum, which is prized for its exhibits on early
Cariboo history. Quesnel also features the world's largest gold pan,
which weighs more than 3,000 pounds and symbolizes Quesnel's fame as "The Gold Pan City."
Accommodations in the Quesnel area range
from RV parks and camping to
bed and breakfast inns. The provincial
heritage site, Cottonwood House, approximately 18 miles east of Quesnel,
offers primitive camping at one of the area's oldest historical
landmarks. Dining opportunities in the Quesnel
area include a wide range of fast-food restaurants as well as several
bistros and coffee houses for the casual afternoon respite.
