Rock Springs, Wyoming is a coal mining town known for its rich natural resources for energy.
North of Rock Springs are the Killpecker Sand Dunes rising over 100 feet and stretching over 100 miles; a popular destination for off road vehicles. Just South of Rock Springs is the Flaming Gorge Recreational Area that boasts very good fishing in addition to boating and other water activities. Boating ramps and marinas are located at several sites around the Lake. The Ashley National Forest has over 1,000 miles of trails for hiking, backpacking and horseback riding.
No trip would be complete without visiting the White Mountain Petroglyphs located in the Red Desert, about 26 miles northeast of Rock Springs. The Red Desert consists of approximately six million acres of multi colored hoodoos, towering buttes, sand dunes, prehistoric petroglyphs from Native Americans along with tipi rings outlining ancient campsites.
