North Central Montana Travel Region
Russell Country
North Central Montana is where East meets West in this geographically diverse state. Etched by numerous rivers, North Central Montana is pocketed by small mountain ranges and gentle rolling hills and valleys. The Crazy Mountains, located at the southern edge of the region, are surrounded by hundreds of square miles of national forestland and offer numerous locations for hiking, fishing and skiing. The Musselshell River is a popular destination for game fishing, particularly cutthroat and mountain white fish. There are also numerous state parks throughout the North Central region that offer fly fishing.
The C M Russell Museum in
Great Falls, Montana features the
works of artist Charles M. Russell, paintings by highly regarded western
American artists O. C. Seltzer, and an outstanding Browning Firearms Collection.
Elk hunting is popular in this region, which includes both public hunting areas and privately owned elk habitat. Antelope, mule and whitetail deer are also open at certain times of the year. Archery season in the North Central region extends from September to mid-October, while the rifle season takes place from mid-October to the end of November.
Of the many historic trails that cross the North Central region, the Lewis and Clark trail, which traces the footsteps of the 19th-century explorers, is the most famous. But the region was also traversed by the Blackfeet Indians some 2,300 years earlier. Markers can be found along the trail outside Chocteau, Bynum and Dupuyer. The Nez Perce trail of 1877 marks the flight of the Nez Perce Indians following their skirmish with the US Calvary in what is now eastern Oregon.
History buffs will also enjoy this region's 30-plus museums, whose topics range from early pioneer life to classic western art. Of the most famous is the CM Russell Museum in Great Falls, which showcases the 19th century art of Charlie Russell, now world famous for his depictions of Montana pioneers.

Choteau Acantha
A weekly newspaper originally established in 1893 in Dupuyer, Montana, a
small rural community some 30-plus miles north of Choteau. A few years
later, the Dupuyer Acantha moved to Choteau and became the Choteau Acantha,
where it has been published continuously for the past 98 years.
Choteau Chamber of Commerce
Choteau is the county seat of Teton County, (population approximately
6,371), and has a population of about 1,700 residents. The town is
located on U.S. Highway 89 about 20 miles east of the Rocky Mountains in a
region called the Rocky Mountain Front and 52 miles from Great Falls.

Cut Bank is located approximately 30 miles south of the Canadian Border near the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and Glacier National Park. The Empire Builder Amtrak passenger train travels through twice daily.
Inn Dupuyer Bed & Breakfast
Located on highway 89 between Great Falls and Glacier National Park. A

rides, hay rides and sleigh rides. Carriage rental for weddings,
anniversaries, birthdays, parades and unique family photo settings.
Community of Fort Benton
A small town of 1,600 people on the Upper Missouri River 42 miles north of
Great Falls with a rich history of fur trading, steam boating, western
exploration and gold seekers. During the gold rush era, fifty
steamboats a season docked along the Fort Benton levee, unloading
equipment and supplies, and loading tons of gold for the trip back to St.
Louis. Today, the levee is a city park and Fort Benton is a favorite
"put in" for canoeist floating the 126-mile stretch of the Upper Missouri
River designated as "Wild and Scenic".

The Circle Bar Guest Ranch
The Ranch was homesteaded in the 1800's, began running cattle in 1902 and
was established as a dude ranch in 1938. Its 1,700 acres are located
in the foothills of the Little Belt Mountains in central Montana. The
property sits on the banks of the Judith River and is in close
proximity to 900,000 acres of National Forest.
