Condon, Montana

Condon is a very small community in a remote area that is surrounded by the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area and Mission Mountains. Just nine miles to the southeast is Holland Lake in the beautiful Flathead National Forest.

Location
Condon lies between the communities of Swan Lake to the north and Seeley Lake to the south on Montana State Highway 83.

Cabins and Cottages

  • Mission Lookout Cabin: Located on Forest Road 9803, this lookout is a 15' x 15' cabin with windows on all sides perched on a 40 foot wooden tower and is equipped with a small bed, fold up cots, a propane cooking stove and simple cooking utensils. An outhouse and fire ring are on the ground level. Must bring own bedding, food, firewood, water and non-open flame light source.
  • Old Condon Ranger Station: Located on Highway 83 between milepost 46 and 47, this old station is part of a historic Forest Service compounds. The cabin has electricity and running water with a flush toilet in bathroom, screened porch, living/dining room with woodstove, gas furnace and full kitchen with refrigerator/freezer, gas range and oven, and can accommodate up to 8 people. Upstairs offers 3 bedrooms with 2 double beds and 4 single beds. Nearest town is Condon.
  • Owl Creek Cabin: Located approximately 4 miles off Highway 83 in Swan Valley at the Owl Creek Packer Camp, this rustic 1 room cabin has sleeping bunks with mattresses, wood heating stove, electric lights, nearby outhouse, and dining service for 4 consisting of pots, pans and utensils. There is no running water. Potable water is just outside front door and is not available during the winter season. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Area offers hiking and horseback riding trails and Holland Lake has swimming, boating and fishing. Nearest town is Condon, approximately 10 miles away.
  • Swan Guard Station: Located at the south end of Swan Lake, this is the oldest building in the Flathead National Forest. Open year-round, this cabin can accommodate up to 10 people and is accessed by road, has electricity, propane heat and a woodstove in the living room. There is no running water but a hand pump and toilet are just outside the cabin. Downstairs has 1 bedroom with a single bed while the upstairs has 2 bedrooms with 2 double beds and 4 single beds.

  • Holland Lake Campground: This campground consists of 2 loops, Bay Loop and Larch Loop, with 40 campsites with trailers up to 50 feet in length and 1 group site, potable water, flush and vault toilets and trash receptacles. Dump station, firewood and food storage containers are available for a fee. This campground is near a boat ramp, trails around Holland Lake, swimming and picnic area. Some campgrounds can be reserved. Nearest town is Condon, 9 miles away. Elevation: 4,055 feet. GPS: 47.44113; -113.60848.
  • Lindbergh Lake Campground: This campground is wheelchair accessible with 11 sites, (trailers up to 20 feet in length), fire rings, vault toilet and boat ramp. There is no water, no garbage service and no reservations. Nearest town is Seeley Lake. Elevation: 4,374 feet. GPS: 47.40715283; -113.7210566.
  • Swan Lake Campground: Located just beyond the lake, this campground has newly paved campspots, 36 campsites, (trailers up to 50 feet in length), a large group site, picnic tables, boat ramp, potable water and vault toilets. There is no electricity or dump station. Nearest towns are Swan Lake and Big Fork is 14 miles away. Elevation: 3,300 feet. GPS: 47.93642; -113.84824.

Outdoor Recreation

Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex
Located in the Flathead National Forest, this wilderness area consists of the Great Bear Wilderness and the Scapegoat Wilderness Areas covering over 1.5 million acres and extends for 60 miles (95 km) along the Continental Divide with elevations varying from 5,000 feet to over 9,000 feet. Big game hunting, fishing, hiking, floating, canoeing, wild berry picking and studying rocks and fossils are some of the many activities for the outdoor enthusiasts.

There are numerous water recreational activities year round. Summer offers boating, both motorized and non-motorized, at Swan, Holland and Lindbergh Lakes, (all have boat ramps), swimming at Swan River, Holland Lake Picnic Site and Swan Lake Swimming Site. Fishing is available at Holland and Lindbergh Lakes and Swan River. Trails meander throughout providing mountain biking, hiking, backpacking and horseback riding opportunities. Winter recreation includes cross country skiing, snowshoeing, mushing/skijoring, snowboarding and snowmobiling.
