Stehekin
is a picturesque, sparsely-populated, remote community lying at the upper end of the
55-mile long Lake Chelan in the glacier-carved Stehekin Valley of
Washington State's North
Cascades. It is the ultimate get-a-way
destination for those wanting a quiet corner of the world in which to
unwind through quiet relaxation or the exercising of muscles in an environment
of magnificent mountains, dark forests, heather meadows and
waterfalls.
Less than 100 people make up the roster of permanent residents.
This tiny population swells in summer months with the addition of seasonal
workers and travelers who come from all over the United States and
various parts of the world. Many of the seasonal workers are
employed by the National Park Service or the few private businesses
providing hospitality services such as lodging, food and local
transportation.
Getting to Stehekin will be by passenger ferry, private boat,
floatplane, horseback, or, on foot. The community has a road, but no
road connections to the outside world.
Reservations for
accommodations are highly recommended. You can
choose from a lodge at the boat landing belonging to the National Park
Service and operated by a concessionaire, or, private cabins, a ranch,
vacation rentals, and campgrounds.
The community's solitary road begins at the boat
landing and follows the meandering Stehekin River to Cottonwood Camp, 23
miles up the glacier-carved Stehekin Valley. The first four miles
are paved, and then its gravel from there on.
